Vienna Parliament building

by Victor Grigore, Webphoto.ro

Designed by architect Theophil von Hansen, the Parliament Building is an outstanding construction, in a city packed with impressive architectural monuments. The building is inspired by Greek architecture, as a symbol of the home of democracy and was the legislative building of the Austrian Hungarian empire. A large ramp climbs to the entrance from both sides, to the steps on top of which are Corinthian columns. On the facade there is a gable with representations of historic regions of Austria.
Bronze statues represent horse tamers, as can be seen in the neighboring yard of Hofburg Palace. The scene is dominated by the elegant statue of Pallas Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, holding a spire and Nike, the goddess of victory. Cvadrigas, chariots used in wars and in parades, also symbolize triumph. At the foot of the column of Pallas Athena there is a fountain with symbolic representations of the main rivers of Austria, including the Danube, on which Vienna rests.
